In WordPress, tags are a relatively new way of grouping similar posts together.

The major difference between categories and tags is that the use of tags will result in external websites, such as WordPress and Technorati, linking your posts to the thousands of posts from other blogs.

Depending upon the objectives of your Blog, this may or may not be beneficial to your efforts to SEO your site. But, in most cases, linking your posts to the WordPress Collective wont benefit your search engine optimization at all.

While the advertised difference is that tags should change with every post, in an SEO WordPress Blog there is no such thing as impromptu posting. An unorganized mind results in poor SEO.
