Accept Only Windows XP
There are many operating systems available for personal computers. But Windows XP is the only one that is worth considering when purchasing a used computer. Windows XP offers the best value for your money. Purchasing anything else will be a waste of both your time and money.
When procuring the ideal used computer accept only the Windows XP operating system. Of Windows XP three different available versions, or service packs, service pack 3 (SP3) is ideally the one that you should always purchase.
Computer manufacturers design computers for running specific operating systems. When purchasing Windows 95, 98, Millennium (ME), or Vista you are also getting hardware that is associated with each of these operating systems. Fooling with a computer that is running Windows 95, 98, or Millennium (ME) is just a total waste of your time and money. While they all have their strong points these operating systems, also, have their negatives. Vista is bigger and more bloated than Windows XP, thereby, requiring a bigger more expensive computer to run on. Vista also will get in your way too much. And, it is much harder to configure.
Since hardware is always paired with the operating system that the personal computer is running, never ever attempt to upgrade your operation system. In short, the operating system that a computer is running equates with its hardware. It would be a waste of money and a big mistake to upgrade. You will only end up with a under powered computer that cannot cope with the newly installed operating system. It is much better to purchase a computer that is already running the desired operating system.
John H. Gohde reminds everyone that Windows XP works great. It does everything that a computer currently needs to be able to do. It is stable, reliable, secure, and dependable. And there is a vast resource of both free and commercial programs on the market that will work with Windows XP service pack 3 (SP3). If it is not broke, then do not fix it.
