SEO Tips & Tricks: They Don’t Want You to Know About

Added Breadcrumb Navigation to Blog

by John H. Gohde on November 22, 2008

John had tried breadcrumb navigation out on his blog several times before. But, he was never satisfied with the results. While sound in theory, breadcrumb navigation systems only work for pages. Once you start fooling around with posts, categories, and tags: All the breadcrumb Wordpress plugins brake down because none of them actually do what they claim.

Google’s recently released Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide recommended the use of breadcrumb navigation. Which once again, peaked John H. Gohde’s interest in implementing breadcrumb navigation.

Breadcrumb Navigation Systems for Wordpress

There was a new Content Management System (CMS) Navigation plugin that was recently released. It mentioned that it had implemented breadcrumb navigation. John wasted a lot of his time looking for where to download it from the plugin home page. Finally, after Googling it and downloading, the ZIP file turned out to be corrupted. All and all, the CMS Navigation plugin ended up being a total disaster.

In desperation, John searched the Web for breadcrumb navigation. And, found a new Wordpress plugin. Naturally, its implementation of breadcrumbs was still not to John’s liking. In fact, it had a number of bugs, including not being able to test for whether or not the plugin was activated. John decided to hack the plugin. But, halfway through the conversion process he remembered reading somewhere that version 2.7 of Wordpress was supposed to include breadcrumb navigation. Did another search, where a Wordpress developer reported that breadcrumbs was being skipped, after all.

So just for the heck of it, John H. Gohde implemented a working version of breadcrumb navigation that perfectly suited his blog. If the next version of Wordpress does not include breadcrumbs, John is planning on releasing a breadcrumb plugin to the public.
