How do you target your keyword? Simple, you give Google what it wants to see. How do you know what Google wants to see? Simple, by studying the Google SERPs for any keyword that you are interested in.

Ranking well in Google is not rocket science, but it does require some work and some skill.

All it takes is some good observational skills performed by any rational person that is not superstitious. If that is you, then with a little work you should be able to figure the answer out for yourself. Simply, take any keyword that you are interested in and study the top ten ranking websites in Google. Observe both what Google lists in the SERPs, as well as the respective webpages themselves in the top ten. What are your observations?

Keyword Density Over Repetition

Now calm down. It is really very simple. You should be observing from the SERP listings that Google lists webpages that sometimes are big in size in the neighborhood of 110k, while sometimes webpages that are tiny are listed that are in the 10k range. In most cases, the smaller size webpages seem to do better than the bigger ones, but not always. What does that observation mean? It means that Google favors keyword density over keyword repetition.

What else can you observe? Put your mouse cursor over the webpage to be studied. Click your right mouse button, and then click on View Page Source or View Source. First of all, the keyword actually appears on your hypertext document. Next, it will appear a number of different times. Usually you will also find it in a number of different header tags, such as <h2>. And, sometimes the keyword is hidden in a graphic image by use of the Alt “text” tags for images.

Target Your Keyword

A high keyword density page means that compared with the total text on a page, the targeted keyword is used a fair number of times. In general, the smaller the page the better. Also, it is better to focus upon only one or two keywords per webpage.

However, there is always a limit. Just like in natural health, it is better to avoid extremes for a healthy webpage. Repeat a keyword too many times and your page can either be penalized or land in the supplemental index. Furthermore, the webpage has to be both readable and of interest to human visitors. This is where your writing skills and content development come into play.

That is basically all that there is to targeting a webpage for your targeted keyword in Google. Now, deciding upon the correct keyword or keywords for your audience is entirely another question.
