Tags are Exciting

Tags in Wordpress are an exciting new way to organize posts. Tags are about an impromptu classification of posts as they are being written. With the right tag plugin, tags possess a lot of organizational power. On John H. Gohde Unleashed, tags are selected by him, but they are assigned to old posts almost automatically. With a little bit of thought, your tag structure should actually complement rather than compete against your category structure.

John is using tags to both deep link old content, as well as to cross-reference his content with an exciting new alternative navigation structure.

Are Tags Better?

John H. Gohde thinks that developers of Wordpress have an unpublished reason for being excited about tags. The implementation of categories in Wordpress was totally botched from day one. In the earlier versions of Wordpress, the distinction between categories and link categories was very muddy and not well enforced. Furthermore, the standard Wordpress functions to list out categories, including their drop-down box function, are buggy with half of the options simply not working at all. John thinks that there must be a reason for this rather sloppy implementation of categories. Truth be known, the Wordpress developers would probably really wish that the category options of Wordpress would be dropped completely.
